"Sticks is a heart-warming tribute to disabled persons and great encouragement
to those just beginning the journey." - Retired Senator Bob Dole
Alfred E. Coleman's remarkable life is a testament to his perseverance, determination,
and strength of character. Overcoming his disability from polio which struck him at age
nine, Coleman went to Oregon State University, became an accomplished archer winning
the Oregon State Archery Association championship in 1932 and 1933, going on to place
7th nationally. Settling in Corvallis with wife Vera, he founded and ran a successful
watch and jewelry business for over forty years, and raised three sons. All the way
along Coleman's journey he was accompanied by his "sticks" - his nickname for his
crutches.
